This is a fairly standard 4-2-3-1 based on my hugely successful Football Manager 2018 formation that took Coventry City from League 2 to the Europa League in five seasons. I have changed Chris' suggested tactic slightly. There will be plenty of substitutions/rotation as the game goes on, so don't worry... I'll do my best to ensure everyone gets their chance at glory! Based on Wednesday, I think Jack is better utilized holding up the ball and causing nuisance up front, and we will need Darrell's stamina and energy against Isaac. The most important thing is *PLEASE STICK TO YOUR POSITIONS*. You know from Wednesdays how short-fused I am at people straying forward at the best of times, but in an 11-a-side we simply cannot have 90% of our team wandering into the final third and leaving us vulnerable to long balls over the top. Please also do not underestimate how big the 11-a-side pitch is and how quickly you'll tire out if you attempt to run from one end to the other the whole game (I include myself in this). I am going to work out a rota before the game so that everyone has a turn in the more attacking positions. I'm expecting a lot of movement from Team Miller on Wednesday, so we're going with *ZONAL MARKING* with the exception of Nik, Paul and Hamid which I'll explain in detail below. While sticking close to whoever's in your vicinity, please do not allow yourself to be dragged out of position to deal with a marauding player, I will be shouting my usual instructions at the back so please trust the back four to do their jobs! We're going to *WORK THE BALL INTO THE BOX*, please keep the ball on the ground and hold the ball up looking for a simple pass rather than constantly looking for the Hollywood defence-splitter (but don't pass any golden opportunities for those up). This will mean you'll need to keep moving if you don't have the ball! Note that the below applies to whoever's playing the position as we rotate around. James Southby will be our goalkeeper. I am not expecting Nuer-esque sweeper keeper heroics, please keep things simple and distribute with short kicks or rolling the ball out to one of the back four... Unless you collect the ball following a corner, in which case feel free, if appropriate, to launch it forward to the attackers. Nik and Paul - You are my Ball Playing Defenders. Stick together and play deep, but keep the ball on the ground wherever possible - Use your full-backs and midfield. Nik, please drop deeper than Paul as I need you to man-mark Kagan or whoever they've got playing as the lone striker. Paul, you can push up a little in order to link up with Hamid, if they start playing a second striker please keep close to Nik and man-mark the second striker. Adrian and Darrell are the Full Backs. I keep things nice and simple at the back, so no bombing forward or attempting overlaps or anything like that. Press forward and travel whenever the opportunity arises but please use the midfield and your equivalent inside forward. Keep a close eye on your wings as Damien and Isaac will undoubtedly cause issues. Hamid Darwish is our Deep Lying Playmaker. Please man-mark Paul Richards in the attacking midfield role as he will look to attack the space behind the attack. Otherwise please be your usual industrial self, covering the gap between defence and midfield and looking to spread the ball out to the wing whenever possible. When we're in the final third, hang forward to mop up any headed clearances. Paul Martin is our Box-to-Box Midfielder. Yes, this will involve running but I remember your hard work and energy from times past! Please drop back to assist in defence whenever needed (particularly when Dan Rider starts marauding forward) and always look to move forward when you have the ball. When we're in the final third, try and hang at the edge of the area to take advantage of any pull-backs. Neil Macfayden is the Shadow Striker. I am looking to you to drop back when we're defending in order to press and harass any of Team Miller's central defenders and midfielders attempting to put together a passing move. When attacking, link up with Rhys and look to make runs into the box as he holds up the ball. Never be too shy to shoot on sight! Marios Tofaris and Jack Huang are Inside Forwards. Use whatever space you have to your advantage, whether you drag out wide for a cross or head into the middle for a shot or through-ball. Use Neil and Paul Martin to your advantage and hold the ball up for them if they make a run. When you don't have the ball, never stop pressing Team Miller's full-backs! Rhys Harries is a Complete Forward. Use your strength to hold the ball up and play in one of the forward three, otherwise hang around the penalty area and strike the ball whenever the opportunity arises! When you don't have the ball, press Team Miller's goalkeeper and central defenders.
