Guus Hiddink came up with a masterstroke in this game against Milan at the Philips Stadium. Having earned a 0-0 draw at the San Siro 15 days earlier, but out-possessed 65-35 by Milan's passing midfield (including the likes of Pirlo, Kaka and Seedorf) he orchestrated a tactical change in his team for the return leg. Playing a 3-3-3-1 with Alex as the libero (not an old-fashioned libero though, but more like the Koeman/Blind/Rijkaard role of libero), and six midfielders (including the wing-backs coming into midfield) he created a 6 vs 4 situation in the Centre of the pitch, in favor of PSV. When attacking, Alex stepped forward becoming an additional midfielder, with Beasley and Farfan going wide, giving space to Aissati, Cocu and Afellay to move behind Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink in a 2-1-4-3 formation (reminiscent of what Bayern and Barcelona play today). PSV, having a respectable 47% possession, earned a much-needed 1-0 win to Progress to CL's next stage.
