LM and RM play high to feed crosses into the box recieved by LS and RS. This is similar to the 4-3-3 where this role is played by full backs but is less taxing as they don’t have to run quite as far up the pitch to play as high and keeps midfield looking happier than if this was done in a 4-3-3. LB and RB to play no higher than midfield. LS should be right footed and RS should be left footed. LM left footed and RM right footed. Centre backs remain deep but can form a line with full backs who drop back when possession is turned over. This is better to protect against counter attacks when playing fullbacks so high. This then should allow you to get away with some deficiencies in CB as more defenders are on hand. This formation is less risky for a weaker team in defence who still want to play an attacking style. Have I just described a normal 4-4-2? I have no idea, you don’t see them that much these days
