This is a fluid 2-8-0 formation, inspired by Barcelona's Pep years. The philosophy is based on his ideas: possession football, attacks built with rapid short passing, swift 1-2s and triangles, high press, super compact defence. Offensively, the main objective is to pass our way into the goal itself. Defensively, to maintain possession as long as possible, and to win back the ball as quickly as possible should we lose it (highly doubtful with Xavi,Iniesta and Zidane as central midfielders!) Beckenbauer has a completely free role on the pitch: he's able either to carry the ball, join the attack, play as sweeper, or do whatever the circumstance demands. Maldini and Puyol are the most static players, playing as centre halves. Iniesta and Xavi are the prime ball handlers, responsible to build the attack as well cover Beckenbauer, when he joins the attack. Roberto Carlos and Dani Alves must provide width to the attack, and form a back-5 defence when the oppposition is in possession. Zidane is crucial, as he's the central artery of the whole system, and Ronaldo (brazilian) and Messi are the 2 most advanced players in this formation; in actuality, they too have free roles - they can play deep, they can play upfront...hell! They are the 2 most perfect players in the history of the game, so they can do whatever they like! Last but not least, Higuita is really important for both the defensive and attacking smooth function of the team. Defensively, he plays more as a second sweeper, intercepting opposition's long balls and counter attacks, and, offensively, he facilitates the possession of the ball, playing outside his area.
