Playing in the 3-1-4-2 you rely on 3 skilled and athletic players on the back line, staying organized and simplifying communication as there is less to sort out. In order for this to work, the Defensive CM (Jose) must hold the space in between the offense and defense. With two players as skilled and quick as Jason and Anthony playing outside back, the overlap is always an option leaving a dual threat when Isaac or Carlos has the ball essentially having players capable of the outside mid position running down line. Although not the largest central mid-fielders, both David and Luke's vision and touch come will help with movement of the ball, and quick decisive play from the back third to the front. Lacking an incredibly dominant player, two up front allows for the players to piston, reinforcing the third man run idea by checking while another player makes the run opening space. The most exciting part of this formation to me is Reid. I think Reid is an incredibly talented athlete, and has a fine touch, however in I see more value in him up top than in the midfield. He is one of the strongest, fastest players on the team, and after watching him shoot after practice, I realized he is also one of the best finishers. I believe the combination of two forwards will allow Reid to take advantage of space if given, and if a player decides to follow the run, that opens up Reid's space for another speedy option, Isaac, in this cast giving Luke two options. Play the short ball to Ryan, receive it back, and either find Isaac through to the left, or Reid through to the right. 5 Keys to this Formation Possessed by Rams: 1.Talented and Athletic Backs, capable of making runs and recovering. 2. Strong Holding Mid capable of holding the ball and also a strong player who can knock players off of the ball in the midfield. 3. Smart players in the ACM position with good vision and ball control, capable of playing the through balls they see. 4. Fast outside mid fielders capable of breaking to the corners or making a striker like run when I striker opens up space for the through ball. 5. Two strikers with the speed and strength to get on the end of through balls and finish.
