The 4-2-3-1 system will allow England to incorporate the tactical strength of both 2015/16 Tottenham Hotspur and 2015/16 Leicester City. The standard 4-2-3-1 will allow England to play the progressive, patient and aggressive style of Tottenham as well as the high pressing and controlling style of Tottenham's 3-4-2-1. The counter-attacking style of Leicester will also be incorporated as the players and system can be changed to a 4-4-2. The Full-Backs (Clyne and Bertrand) will be allowed to venture forward providing width as False Wing-Backs. The Defensive Midfielder (Eric Dier) will drop in between the two Centre-Backs forming a back three when the Full-Backs venture forward, when in the possession he will also act as a Sweeper collecting possession if lost, pressing high up the field and ensuring that possession is easily turned over from the defence to midfield, when the switch to a flat 4-4-2 occurs. The Central Midfielder (Jonjo Shelvey) and the Central Attacking Midfielder (Delli Alli) will form a Midfield Duo in front of the Defensive Midfielder when not in possession and when the Full-Backs push forward thus creating the flat midfield 4 of a 3-4-2-1. The Central Midfielder will sit in a Deep-Lying Playmaker role where he will dictate the tempo of the game and recycle possession and launch attacks from deep in midfield when in a 4-2-3-1 and 4-4-2. The Central Attacking Midfielder will press the opposition high and drop into the Central Midfield to create a 3 when not in possession. He will also switch to a Wide Midfield position as either a Left or Right Midfielder when the formation switches to a 4-4-2. The Left and Right Wingers will be given the license to cut inside and attack centrally as well as provide a threat from the wide areas. They will also be given the freedom to switch sides when they see fit. They will both be fundamental to the policy of pressing high up the pitch when not in possession. The Left Winger (Ross Barkley) will be the chief creative presence in the forward line of the team. He will be able to drop into an Attacking Midfield role when the formation switches to a 3-4-2-1 and thus will be able to pull the strings from a more advanced position. He will also drop to a flat Wide Midfield role when the formation becomes a 4-4-2 and will be the driving force forward from midfield when in this position. He will take up a position from either the Right or Left in all formations. The Right Winger (Jamie Vardy) will be in a wide Support Striker role cutting inside and utilising his pace to get in behind the opposition defence. He will also provide width by running into wide-areas of the pitch when on the counter-attack. When the formation switches to a 4-4-2 he will take a position in front of the Striker and will make a series of runs in behind the defence of the opposition into a wider role. In a 3-4-2-1 he will be able to at times become an auxiliary Striker and get in behind the defence of the opposition. He will take up a position from either the Right or Left in all formations. The Central Striker (Harry Kane) will begin as a lone target man who is responsible for holding up the ball and running in behind the defence when necessary. He will also be given license to drop deep into midfield and collect the ball switching positions with the Left or Right Winger. This license is increased in the 3-4-2-1 formation where the Left or Right Winger will be allowed to stretch beyond the main Striker. When in the 4-4-2 formation he will be allowed to drop deeper and play as a second striker behind the Auxiliary Striker and score goals from a deeper position or from late runs into the opposition box. At all times he will be instructed to press from the front and put pressure on the defence of the opposition.
