4-1-4-1 was only a few times deployed by the Hungarian national team earlier – the new manager, Attila Pintér chose this formation for the match vs. Finland (1–2). Rudolf played more or less a false nine, moving back often, with the wingers rushing up. One of the problems was the loss of contact between the back four and the crowded offensive midfield, while Varga - as the sole defensive midfielder - couldn't cover all the spaces. Later Pintér switched to 4-2-3-1 and a 4-4-2, too.
