The Stars and Stripes' sudden change to a diamond 4-4-2 was foiled by constant pressure by the Black Stars. An outstandingly early goal by sniper Dempsey led to the Ghanians constantly pushing forward, looking for a goal (unfortunately for them, being in control is not their strong point). The Americans forced Ghana to unlock an overpopulated defense and once they tried something other than crossing the ball from the right flank, Ayew finds his way into the box due to poor tracking by Germ-American Johnson and slots it into Howard's near post. The Americans pushed forward and played proactively leading to a now historical set piece goal off the head of JA Brooks. The USA continued to defend in a 4-4-2 with Bradley playing on line with D-Mid ace Beckerman; both played well defensively, while both found it hard to keep possession for the US; Bradley having a surprisingly hard time linking the American midfield with the attack. Jones, while dominating most of the left flank high up the pitch, left Beasley out to dry and was forced to defend 2-v-1's against speedsters Atsu and Opare; Beasley did well forcing them to cross, which both attackers did poorly with. Defensive and tactical masterclass from Klinsmann and the US, but will need more attacking saavy next time around.
