Identical starting line-up for all four of Italy's matches in the tournament. The composition of the midfield five is interesting, and certainly that of their inner core of three players: Giannini in the centre, Ancelotti as the inside left, De Napoli as the inside right. The latter is almost entirely working in a defensive capacity, operating inside Donadoni, allowing the wide right man to come forward. Maldini has greater defensive responsibilities along his flank. Giannini and Ancelotti almost work as pistons in relation to one another: One should sit while the other goes forward. This rarely sees Italy attack with more than four men, even if Baresi may come forward from his spare defenceman's position when he acknowledges an opportunity.
