In the 1966 World Cup Final hosted at Wembley, Great Britain under Matt Busby lined up in their standard 4-3-3 formation. Captain Duncan Edwards completed a front three that included the likes of the talismanic Jimmy Greaves and legendary Denis Law. Jim Baxter and the prodigious youth George Best started on the wings, while the great Bobby Charlton occupied central midfield. Bobby Moore and Welshman John Charles were centre-backs, while Ray Wilson and George Cohen were the full-backs. The Soviet Union on the other hand lined up with a 2-3-2-3 (2-5-3). The game was an intense and goal-filled affair, with Great Britain narrowly defeating their Cold War rivals 3-2 after extra time to claim their first ever World. George Best scored the winning goal in final minute of extra time to cap off an amazing hattrick, cementing his status as the greatest footballer of all time.
