Scuffet plays as a supporting sweeper, comes out to collect any lose ball that gets behind the 2 defenders. Balanta and Koscielny are well suited ball playing defenders, and distribute the ball with short passing as often as possible. Wing backs act as water carriers, covering ~14km per game. Khedira acts as a half back, dropping in front of the defenders for cover, and getting rid of the ball as quick as possible. Ramsey is a deep lying playmaker, carrying the ball forward and releasing it to the more creative players further up the field. Ozil is an advanced playmaker, playing killer through balls to the forwards and wing backs. Ødegaard is an "enganche", he does not track back, but he distributes the ball effectively to bring other players into the game. Depay is a "trequartista", and spearheads most attacks, driving forward putting pressure on the opposition backline. Zivkovic acts as an advanced forward, but is essentially a poacher, putting a clinical finish on the through balls and back passes played to him. This formation is inspired by the French "magic square", made famous by Michel Platini. It is used to great effect if a team possesses players with great vision and passing, and allows a team to protect its own defenders by simply retaining possession within this "square" in midfield.
