Barry fulfils the role of the free 'auxiliary defender' either covering the wing backs on the flank or sweeping up centrally. When the centre backs split to receive the ball from the goalkeeper Barry tucks in to form a temporary back three. Width is provided by the wingbacks of Baines and Barkley, generally hugging the touchline but occasionally coming inside and combining with the central attackers. They essentially perform the role of wingers with additional defensive duties. Pienaar will move inside playing between the lines and exchanging passes on the left flank. Mirallas performs a similar role but with more licence to shoot. Both players freely change positions along with Barkley across the front four. Barkley's main role is to carry the ball further up the pitch and combine with the other forward players. McCarthy joins in with attacks performing a deep-lying playmaker role, switching play and providing a safe pass further up the pitch. He has the additional duty of covering for Coleman when he is the more advanced player. Lukaku brings in the attacking players, holding the ball up and generally occupying the opposing centre-backs.
