Note: Luxembourg's both centre halfs played the entire first half in a number 5 shirt. Petry changed into the number 4 shirt at half time and re-appeared wearing the correct number. This was more or less a straight 4-2-4 for the home side, with Futre clearly attacking with intent down his flank, and Paneira, in the first half, doing the same thing, well joined by Jaime the debutant. At half time, Juca brought off the ineffectual Jordão and replaced him with wide midfielder Magalhães, who would take up a position wide right, with Paneira moving in more centrally. Krings was anonymous throughout the hour which he played and was substituted with Theo Malget in a straight switch.
